About Us

Foxlow Photography is a contemporary portrait studio in the heart of historic Wirksworth. Inspired by the charm and character of Hopkinson’s House, Jon Davies and Danielle Cartwright have brought their 20 years' experience in city centre photography studios to the Derbyshire Dales.

The most important things in my life are my wife, my cat, my dog and photography. Growing up, my auntie was the family photographer. At the time I hated having to stand in a line and smile for family photos in the garden when all I wanted to do was run around and play, but now I have boxes of her photographs and I treasure every one of them!

My first camera was an old 35mm film Olympus and from the moment I heard that shutter click, I was hooked. I photographed anything and everything at first, but soon discovered the power of portraiture and realised that was all I wanted to do. Capturing a moment or expression that allows you to see a side of someone’s personality that’s rarely seen is an amazing feeling.

I understand that it can be a little scary in the studio for children and adults alike, so I try to keep things relaxed in the studio. It's so rewarding to see people's reactions to their photos or those of their loved ones; it makes all the hard work seem worthwhile.

"What I admire most about Jon is his ability to put clients at ease from the moment they meet him! His warm disposition and calm manner is infectious, so he can bring out the best in everyone he photographs. For Jon, it’s not enough to get a beautiful picture. He goes out of his way to make sure that every client feels special in their portraits." Danielle

I’ve always been creative and loved every form of art from colouring and baking to singing and drama, but photography has a special place in my heart. My family have collected albums of wedding, holiday, Christmas and studio photos for generations (my great-great-grandma’s album is one of my most treasured possessions) and family photos hang on the walls of all our homes.

It's a huge privilege to be invited to celebrate a special moment in someone's life and it's amazing to witness the effect that portraits can have on how someone sees themselves.

At the same time, I know how nerve-wracking it can be for a lot of people to step in front of the camera, myself included. So I've made it my mission to do anything I can to help people prepare for their photoshoot and enjoy their time with us. I'm always happy to have a chat, answer your questions or share some advice. So please call or text me anytime on 07495047746.

"Some of us are creative, some are organised and others just know how to help people feel at ease. It's rare that anyone can do it all - but that's Danielle! When you're messaging or calling us, it's probably Danielle you'll speak to. She'll ensure that everyone is where they need to be and knows what they need to know. Essentially she's the heart of Foxlow Photography." Jon

Our Studio

We created our portrait studio in Hopkinson’s House in the heart of Wirksworth, Derbyshire. We fell for its charm the moment we saw it and have embraced the history of the building and its countryside setting. Hopkinson's House was built in 1631 for William Hopkinson, a wealthy lead merchant from nearby Ible, and was rescued from a ruinous state in the 1980s by the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust. Considering its years of neglect, it’s amazing to see so many original features preserved including inglenook fireplaces and pressed designs in the plasterwork.

Our cosy lounge is the heart of the studio. It's designed to be the perfect spot to plan your photoshoot with a cup of coffee, to view your images on the HD screen and to design artwork for your home with samples of frames and albums for you to consider in comfort.

Is your studio accessible for those with limited mobility?

Our studio and viewing lounge are located up a wooden staircase with a turn, so unfortunately we are not accessible to those who use a wheelchair or struggle with stairs. If you’re concerned or unsure, please call us on 01629 828 300 to discuss the options before you book.

Where can I park?

The best option is to park next to the Hope and Anchor pub in the Market Place car park which has plentiful pay and display parking. It’s only a 3 minute walk from the car park to the studio and we always email you directions when you book an appointment with us.

Can I pop in to see you?

We're always happy to offer a consultation at the studio before you book a photoshoot with us or to plan your photoshoot together, but the studio is open by appointment only. To arrange a time to meet us for a coffee and chat, please call us on 01629 828 300.
